Giving to charity is a great way to help out other people, and it can make you feel pretty good, too. Of course, not all charities do the same kinds of work, and they don’t all need the same kinds of things. That’s important to remember, because some people try to give something to charity that the charity can’t use. Then they get upset when the charity doesn’t want or accept what they’re trying to give it. If you’re going to donate to charity, talk with the charity you’re planning on giving something to, and ask what the charity needs the most.
Almost all charities need money, of course, but there might be charities that need specific items more than actual cash. You can easily find out what a charity needs simply by calling or stopping in and asking. That way you’ll be sure to provide what’s needed, instead of just what you want to give. Of course, if you’re donating to Goodwill or the Salvation Army – or another type of charity that takes in donations and sells them to make money to help people – you can bring almost anything that’s still usable and in good shape. These kinds of charities are probably the easiest to give to, because they can use such a large variety of things.
There are also charities that are much more specific, which is why it’s a good idea to ask a charity what it needs before you make a donation. Don’t forget about charities that aren’t human-based, like your local humane society. It can probably use dog and cat food, blankets, and other items. A quick phone call will put you on the right track, especially if you’re new to giving to charity and not quite sure which of them need certain things.
