Is is About Protecting Kids?

If you have ever gotten into a discussion about the nature of most charitable causes, the one fallback position that almost everybody takes is that it is all about feeding and protecting the children who are born into a definite lack of privilege. Nobody can claim that a child who is born into a bad situation had anything to do with causing it to be that way and be serious about it. The parents are clearly at fault in situations of that nature.

But then, when you donate to a charitable cause, how much different is it from putting money into welfare, section 8 housing, or any other hand out? How is donating to a charity not simply freeing up the money that the parents make for more fun things than paying bills and enriching their children? How is this not just pouring more fuel on the flames of poverty and the dependent mindset? How is this not just encouraging the problem to continue and even grow, instead of stopping it from continuing onward into the future?

If we truly want to protect the innocent children who were born into poor, abusive situations, is donating to charitable organizations really the best way to do so? Yes, it actually is. While some charities merely work to provide immediate support and hand outs, some work to educate the poor and help them to become more self sufficient, so that they can be more effective overall. They may teach their children better ways.
