When the holiday season arrives, a lot of charities become more aggressive about asking for donations. They want to help people who are struggling at any time of year, but they really want to help around the holidays, when people like to give gifts to their children and have enough to eat to enjoy a good, healthy meal with friends and family members. If you have money to give, you can help a lot of people throughout the holidays. If you don’t have much money, consider giving something else. Donating food or other items, or just giving of your time by being a volunteer, can be great ways to help others without hurting your bank account.
Some people feel more compelled to give during holiday times, and other people get tired of all of the groups and people asking for money. There’s a balance to be had when it comes to those kinds of things, of course. Charities aren’t out to annoy people. They just genuinely want to help – and giving to them can feel great when you see the good you’re doing for other people who are less fortunate than you are. During tough economic times, there are even more of them who need help.
If your funds (or your other giving options) are very limited, make sure you take the time to decide which charities are really right for you. Some may speak to your heart and your passions and interests more than others, so don’t assume that you have to give to every charity that asks you to. Give to the ones you feel best about, and the ones you think will make the most difference in the lives of others. That way you can give freely and feel good about what you’re doing.
