Charity Giving

Charities are everywhere, people may not know how many there really are or even how many lives they touch. It has been noted that without the help of charities, America would not be able to function. Charities help with so much of the need, reaching even beyond the borders of America. Reaching to the outer most corners of the earth and touching and changing lives, just as they are meant to do.

Billions of dollars are given every year in America to various charities. Philanthropy, giving to those in need, has become a way of life for most people. In 2009 giving reached $303.74 billion, over $227.4 billion came from individual contributions. We as human beings have a responsibility to give back. To extend a helping hand to those who have a need.

Many give cash to help, but you can also give a portion of your time. Though you can not claim time on your tax forms, it is one thing that is sorely needed in most charities to function. Many charities are non-profit organizations, especially the local ones. If you are looking to give back somehow consider giving some time to your local food shelf, shelter, or youth center.

There are also many groups such as Big Brother/Big Sister and the Salvation Army which will also take lightly used donated items to sell. The profit from these donations are put back into the charity to help others. You in turn can ask for and receive a receipt to use for the donation section of your taxes.

There are many worthy causes outside of the borders of America. Though you may never get a chance to visit these countries, this does not mean that you can not help. World Vision or Oxfam Unwrapped are all good worthy causes that lend a helping hand. World Vision provides food and education. Oxfam provides farm animals or trees to start a family business in third world countries.

If you do your homework, you will find that there are many worthy causes that you can contribute to. Reach out and help someone today.
