There is a certain slippery slope to the notion of battered women. While no one wants there to be situations in which a woman who is attracted to the man who beats her stays with him, this is going on all over the world right now. The liberals see a situation like this as a chance for people to reach out this type of woman, and show her that she has independence when she clearly feels powerless against her attraction to the man and to her own insecurities about ever being by herself. Conservatives, on the other hand, see this as a situation where a woman has chosen a man whose insecurities mesh with her own, and who is ultimately getting what she really wants- no need to give a hand out there.
There is validity to both sides of this argument. On the one hand, a woman does choose to stay with the man, and many women are going to stay with men who beat them until those very same men either storm off, or beat them to death.
However, it is the responsibility of caring individuals to at least off the chance at escape to these all but imprisoned women. While it may be nearly impossible to overcome insecurities and deadly attractions, it is possible to do these things. While it may be fruitless in many cases, it is still the right thing to do to make the offer. After all, every person deserves at least some chances.
