You can help causes you are passionate about, even if you cannot afford to donate money. Whether it is a shelter for battered women, a home for abused children or shelters for the homeless, you can use anything you do well to help.

Everyone is good at something, and some people are better at a few things than most other people are. Whether you are a writer, an artist, or have great organizational skills, you can offer your services. This will go a long way in giving aid to people, and will satisfy your desire to help them.

Writers

Writers can assist in creating flyers or promotional pieces to let others in the community know about a shelter, and the work they do. They can distribute information to others who are also looking for ways to volunteer. Writers can also use the Internet to bring awareness to the problems of those in shelters, by dedicating web sites to the cause, or sharing news about the shelter on social networking sites. Another way to get others involved is to write an article or a letter to the editor of a local or national newspaper, about the good work the people at the shelters are doing.

Artists

Painters, sculptors, and photographers can create artwork for the walls of the facility or the individual rooms that create a pleasant atmosphere. Those with artistic skills can also offer to hold art or photography classes for the residents. Another way to help is to sell artwork and donate the money to the shelter.

Organization Skills

Because money is important for keeping these shelters open, there is a strong need to come up with ways to raise that money. People with great organization skills can offer their services and brainstorm ideas for fundraisers. They can also contribute their time by contacting others to get involved. They can deal with the details and work with the shelter to set up the dates, places, and times for fundraisers.

Whatever skills people possess that they are willing to share, will help them find ways to raise money and awareness.
