Be Aware-Charity Scams

Most people are tender hearted and wish to help others in times of need. When we see others hurting we want to help, whether with our wallet or our time. When it comes to giving to charity though we need to be careful and let our head rule over our heart. There are many fake charities popping up, people trying to con others out of their money. These fake charities often show up after some sort of natural disaster, so you need to learn to be aware and know what to look for.

*Always ask for a name and address for the charity. Know who you are donating to and why. If possible get a phone number and check them out before donating.

* Make sure that the charity is actually doing a drive at this point in time. Do not be fooled by someone who says they are working for the charity, when they are actually not. Get the person’s name and confirm that they work for the charity.

*Be cautious of any e-mails asking for donations. If you have NOT given to the this charity before they would not be e-mailing you asking for money. Check them out!

*Do not allow anyone to pressure you into giving to a cause. YOU decide to what and whom you wish to give, then stick to your decision.

*Most charities will not be going door to door asking for donations. Verify, Verify, verify, all information, be aware!

If in doubt at any time about the legitimacy of a charity check them out with the Better Business Bureau. Don’t be afraid to give, just make sure you do your homework. There are many great causes out there.
