Battered women often feel as though they don’t have anywhere to turn. They don’t want to stay, but they don’t see how they can leave, either. Because of that, they end up stuck in abusive relationships when they don’t deserve to be treated that way at all. If you’re facing abuse or being battered, there are shelters that can help you. Many women are afraid to leave because they feel the batterer will come after them, but shelters can protect you and they can help you make a plan to get away safely – even if you have children that you need to take with you. Once you have a plan, you’ll be empowered to get past the battering and the danger, and make a fresh start for yourself.
Even if you’ve never been battered and don’t know anyone personally who has, there are plenty of women out there right now that are frightened and alone. You can help them by giving of your time and talents – and finances if you’re able – so that they can have a better life. They often have children who also need to escape the abuse, and they can all get a fresh start at a battered womens’ shelter. Don’t assume that a little bit of help won’t matter or isn’t enough. Anything you can give to help these women will be more than they had before.
If you’re planning on giving to a battered womens’ shelter, check out the ones in your area and see what they have to offer. Some of them have more services than others, some may be connected to churches, and some may be struggling more than others in an effort to help these women. Choose one (or more) that you feel is right, and give what you can. You could save lives that way.
