When you’re giving to charity, you’re not only giving to someone who needs it, but you’re helping yourself, too. You can write it off on your taxes, but there’s more to the story than just that. You also get a much-needed boost just from doing something nice for someone else. It can raise your self-esteem, help you to feel valuable, and remind you of the blessings you have in your life, all at the same time. If you want to give to charities, it’s important that you take the time to learn about them and decide which one is the best option for your donation.
You can certainly give to more than one charity, too, so don’t assume that you have to stay with only one option. You can give to one charity, two charities, or fifty charities, depending on how much money you have, the kinds of things you’re giving, or how much time you have. Don’t assume that you can’t do anything just because you might not be able to do much, either. Even small things can be very helpful, and when everyone does something small, it often equates to something big. It’s very important to keep that in the forefront of your mind. You’re doing a good thing, even if you can’t do as much as you would like or as much as someone else is doing.
There will always be people who can and do give more than you, but it’s not a competition. Some people who have the means to give a lot don’t bother to give anything at all, so don’t feel discouraged if your ability to donate isn’t as large as you would hope. Perhaps in the future you’ll be in a position to do more, but for now, just do what you can.
